Democrats: Congress should work together to ensure that multi-employer pension plans continue to provide the retirement security American workers expect

Jun 20, 2012 Issues: Labor, Retirement and Pensions

This morning, the Subcommittee on Health, Employment, Labor and Pensions held a hearing entitled,"Assessing the Challenges Facing Multiemployer Pensions." There was agreement that Congress should work together in order to ensure that multi-employer pension benefits are there for workers when they expect them.

Below, Reps. Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.) and Rob Andrews (D-N.J.) discuss the importance of these plans to millions of Americans and ensure they continue to have retirement security.

Rep. McCarthy emphasized the importance of these modest benefits for these retirees because many of these jobs require strenuous physical activity that wears on a body, especially over decades of work.

Rep. Andrews summed up that this issue is important not only for current and future retirees, but also of vital important to businesses and taxpayers.
